What a wonderful evening! Nothing to Prove and Velvet Green whet our appetites before Boo began his outstanding set. Boo ranks with the top echelons of the folk world, which showed with the club being packed - almost standing room only. This was the first time I had seen Boo, and I soon realised that I had been missing one of this country’s great singer songwriters.
His stage presence was such that he soon engaged the audience with his relaxed style and exacting music especially when he encouraged ‘shaker’ participation and even called for a shaker solo!

All his songs were played with sympathy and superb guitar work. Several stuck out though, ‘Dragonflies’, ‘Bible Pages’ and ‘Follow my Tears’. The lyrics from ‘Follow my Tears’ trace tears from eyes to, – well to quote,

“From my eyes to the river
From the river to the sea
From the sea to the darkening clouds
From the sky back down to me
Follow my tears, follow my tears.”

The evening was very moving, the songs wide ranging both lyrically and musically. There was humour and participation when he introduced a dancing competition. I wasn’t expecting anyone to take up the challenge but five extroverts did their thing and the winner received a Boo CD. We all enjoyed the evening immensely.

Thanks also go to Bryn Phillips for starting the second half with two songs (recognised by Boo as the composer of ‘Silver and Gold’ from a Vin Garbutt session) and for compering the night.
