I had the immense joy of seeing one of my all time favourite artists, Kim Lowings and The Greenwood, play a sold out gig at the Woodman Folk Club, near Stourbridge on Friday. We were royally entertained by Kim, vocals, Appalachian dulcimer, guitar and The Greenwood - Andrew Lowings, guitars, bouzouki and bodhran, Dave Sutherland double bass, vocals and Tim Rogers on his new state of the art Cahon. This, their annual gig at The Woodman, also coincided with the club's 53rd birthday.

There was something for everyone with new songs like The Lavender Fields and Cold Winter, Greenwood favourites including In Spirit, Dark Eyed Sailor, Maggie's Song and of course their anthemic gig closer Away Ye Merry Lassies - complete with mass sing a long choruses. Traditional songs - Oh The Wind and Rain a highlight (it wouldn't be a folk gig without some murder and death)! There were some well chosen covers - an exquisite take on Sandy Denny's The Music Weaver, which I had not heard Kim sing previously and Joni Mitchell's Carey were standouts for sure. And it would be remiss of me not to mention the band's superlative performance of The Unknown, a song commission about making decisions without being sure of the outcome - goosebumps time and lyrics that I acted upon!

Kim's voice was absolutely stunning, pure and beautiful and the band were on fire throughout two fantastic sets. So many magical moments in a memorable evening at this warm and welcoming folk club. And so good to share the evening in the company of John Bailey and Chris Hedges.
