Mair’s concert on the 28th January was a tour-de-force. She is a singer songwriter from the Welsh borders,singing acapella or with a guitar accompaniment. She also plays at folk festivals,eisteddfods,folk clubs around her area and weddings. Her repertoire is wide including an interest in traditional Welsh songs. She has won competitions in regional song contests (Shropshire singer/songwriter competition) and appeared on regional radio programmes ( Radio Shropshire,Radio Worcestershire). She has a strong enjoyable voice with Welsh intonation. Her guitar playing is expressive using a finger picking style. Her songs on the night were varied including well known folk songs and her own nicely crafted songs as well as pop and country songs. These included songs by well known artists such as Paul Simon, Marvin Gaye and Bonnie Raitt. She also covered Roberta Flack, Ewan McColl, Chris Wood, Clifford T Ward, Richard Thompson and Tom Paxton among others. Her interpretations were really enjoyable. Our Folk Club audience was extremely attentive and all were very impressed. ‘ A lovely voice’ ‘Good choice of songs’ ‘Clear diction’ ‘Nice person’ ‘Relatively faultless’ ‘Stunning’ ‘Touched by magic’ ‘Absolutely great!’ Mair was supported by Dick Woodhouse whose Jake Thackray songs amused and titillated the audience. He played the guitar adeptly and sang brightly including also Jez Lowe and John Richards' songs. The overall response was very warm and congratulatory to both our artists on the night. An altogether memorable evening. Mair will be welcome back at our Club any time. |
