(Review taken from Derry's Facebook Post) Ruth & Ken Powell are and will always be, great favourites of the Woodman Folk Club. The reason for this is that over the many years that they have played for us, they have never failed to delight the audiences from past, present and, I’m making a very safe bet, the future too. There is always something special about married couples appearing on-stage with each other. The banter between couples is often hilariously funny and that’s true of Ruth and Ken too, but this amazing duo takes that relationship to it’s very highest level. Ken makes all the instruments that he plays, so he knows every note, every nuance and every harmonic, inside out. Ken has developed his skilful technique over many years to precisely compliment this and it enables him to take full advantage of all his instruments superb playability. Ruth has an amazing voice that produces rich tonality and crystal-clear top notes that seamlessly intertwine with the musical accompaniment. Whether it be ballads, country, or something a little rockier, it is always spot-on. Together they present an absolutely delightful, intimate performance that compels audience’s to participate in every song/tune. Ruth and Ken Powell, Bravo! Not to be out-shined our wonderful Woodmanite, Bryn Phillips did us all proud. Plucking songs from his vast wealth of material and belting them out with great skill. Every subject you can think of is covered by at least one of Bryn’s most excellent self-penned works. From political statements, blues, biographical stories to humorous encounters with day-to-day tech and even aliens in flying saucers!! Brilliant Bryn! |
