In our 39th year and stronger than ever

Hi Folks

As we swing into the final third of our season a glittering array of talent has been assembled for your delight and entertainment.

The club reopens on Friday 17th April with a SINGERS NIGHT. Always popular and always bursting with the best of local and not so local talent these nights are not to be missed.

The following week Friday 24th April we welcome back, after a couple of years in Australia, the one and only KIERAN HALPIN.

Kieran is one of my favourite artists and I have travelled many miles to see him perform.

Whilst Kieranís albums are always something to look forward to it is live on stage where he makes his mark. Powerful and passionate, intimate and intense, he is impossible to ignore. His voice has such an edge to it that he sounds like he is living every song. He has managed to marry his intelligent and thought provoking lyrics with great melodies and has developed over the years into a writer with a style of his own. All of this is underscored by an incisive wit in his introductions, which helps an audience to understand where the song comes from, and hint at where it might be going. Miss this night and you will be sorry!

Another Singers Night follows on 1st May as we start to brush the dirt off our groundsheets check to see that we still have gas in our bottles prior to the festival season.

BUT there is a lot of entertainment before we get there!

The following week, 8th May we renew our acquaintance with JOE TOPPING.

We have not seen Joe at the club for a few years but he is in such demand that it is difficult to track him down, having toured the folk clubs and festivals on his own and with various groups including The John Wright Band and The Tom Topping Band as well as touring with Joe Wright.

In addition to his work with ELBOW JANE, Joe is a first class singer songwriter and performer in his own right. Wonderful guitar and mandolin playing complement his outstanding warm and expressive vocal style.

This will be an evening of pure quality, as will the following week 15th May when we say hello to BBC Folk Musician of the year, TOM McCONVILLE who will be appearing with David Newey.
Tom McConville, primarily known as The Newcastle Fiddler, is one of the leading fiddle players of our time. A virtuoso musician and fantastic singer, his rich and warm voice makes his interpretation of traditional and contemporary songs greatly admired by singers throughout the world.

In great demand as a performer, session musician and teacher, playing the fiddle is his lifelong passion and he has achieved every playerís dream of creating his own unique, instantly recognizable sound.

His live performances combine a rollercoaster of musical delights from fast, rhythmic dance tunes - through beautiful slow airs and of course, great singing - all presented with his inimitable sense of humour and style. Over the years Tom has had many collaborations, including Kieran Halpin and Pauline Cato and David Newey joins him tonight. David is one of the UK's most in-demand young acoustic guitar player, songwriter and singer. This is sure to be one of those very special nights.

There are lots more to come so open up your diary and pencil in the following.
