Newsletter - June 2018

29 Dec 2018

Hi Folks

Well May has bin ‘n gorn an’ day we have sum fun?
An’ now it’s almost June an’ we’m hopin’ for sum sun,
We kick orf with Eddy Morton, now ‘es a local chap,
Then there’s other nights to tell yer abaht, brilliant stuff - no cra…err….rubbish!
(With apologies to Black Country bards one and all)!

You can all ignore Friday 1st June as the club will be closed. A sizeable contingent of the club members should have been enjoying the delights of the Wirral Folk Festival but it got cancelled and unfortunately the room got booked up for a private do. But never mind because as I said……..

…….on Friday 8th we commence June revelries with Eddy Morton & Friends. This will be another act new to the club, although only in this current guise. Eddy Morton has appeared fairly regularly over many years now, primarily several appearances with the brilliant Bushburys (or The New Bushbury Mountain Daredevils if your memory stretches back that far), but also as a solo act and if my memory serves me right I believe he’s also appeared with Sunjay in the past – but don’t quote me on that. Andy Jones has certainly graced our stage in the past with the now defunct Flaxenby and is a stunning fiddle player. Completing the trio tonight will be Paul Hodson on keyboards and squeeze-box. Yo’d be mad ter miss it!

Then on Friday 15th we welcome for their third appearance the wildly popular BarlowCree. Back by popular demand, Liam Millinship and Jonny Matthew - collectively BarlowCree - are up from the valleys of South Wales (although Jonny is originally a Yorkshireman), and are making their second appearance with us tonight. With Liam on guitar and both of them on vocals you will hear a host of self-penned and traditional material delivered in an affable style from two very likeable chaps who have accrued a large following on the club and festival scene. They’ve released their second CD - Broadsword - since their last visit and an excellent one it is too. It’ll be a night you won’t want to miss….trust me!

Next is Friday 22nd when we are hosting the excellent Scolds Bridle. Now unless I’m mistaken – which believe it or not has been known – this will be the very first visit to the club of this well-established duo of Sue Bousfield and Liz Moore who have been creating their music together for over 40 years – obviously since they were very young children!! Two lassies from Lancashire, they begun performing together in 1974 and with Liz on various stringed instruments and both on vocals, we are in for a treat. Expect fine harmonies, beautiful music and an infectious humour which all combine to make a wonderful stage presence from these two consummate professionals. We welcome them to the Woodman fold.

On Friday 29th it’s another fantastic Singers Night. You know the drill, get there early to book your spot as Singers' Nights are very popular and slots are limited However, to be sure, it would be best to book a spot in advance by contacting Debby & Derry either by phone or email - contact details are on the home page. Spots are limited to 14 and always fill up very quickly.

Please note that if you have pre-booked a spot you need to be at the club before 8:30 to confirm, or the slot may be re-allocated

As you know, next month will be a short one with a week taken out for Bromsgrove Folk festival and an early finish due to our summer closure, however there WILL be a couple of cracking nights before then and further details are on the website and will also be in the next newsletter.
