Now here’s a rarity! A month without a Singers night at all…..can’t
remember one of those before but for various reasons this April we all
have the usual ‘night off’ PLUS three wonderful guest nights, so without
further preamble let’s see what’s in store for us….. ……on the 7th you can all go down the pub or just chill in front of the telly because we will be closed as its GOOD FRIDAY. (I hasten to add that it wasn’t so named just because we’re shut!!) The 14th will be a good night because it brings the third appearance at the club of the very talented Jack Blackman. Jack made his debut with us back in October 2016, although I must admit, it doesn’t seem like that long ago! Anyway - a little about him: all of you who saw him last time will already know that Jack is a stunning young talent, fast developing into one of the most accomplished and exciting performers on today’s acoustic roots scene. His guitar and slide guitar playing is simply exquisite and his songs have been generating a great deal of interest within the folk music world. His style is predominantly bluesy but he manages to effortlessly fuse it with songs in the folk idiom, many of which are his own compositions. Another great night on the cards I predict. Then on the 21st of the month we are pleased to introduce a new duo for the club, Plumhall (Michelle Plum and Nick B Hall), an electrifying duo from Yorkshire whose award winning original songs are earning them well deserved plaudits from the likes of Miles Hunt (The Wonder Stuff),and Phil Beer & Steve Knightley (Show of Hands). PLUMHALL pack a punch with powerful acoustic (occasional electric) guitar and luscious harmony-driven textures of original contemporary folk rock. Michelle and Nick were thrilled to have been invited to perform at The London Palladium with the legendary Al Stewart. They have also written music for, and appeared in, a major British cinematic release called THE RUNAWAYS, starring Mark Addy, Tara Fitzgerald & BAFTA winner Mollie Windsor. They sound like naturals for the Woodman! Finally on the 28th we take great pleasure in welcoming back The Lost Trades. A trio of Wiltshire based singer songwriters (Jamie R Hawkins, Phil Cooper and Tamsin Quin), brought together by a mutual love of modern folk and roots music. Having joined forces in late 2019, their close, three part harmonies have consistently drawn comparisons to Crosby Stills & Nash and Fleetwood Mac. Performing both collectively and individually penned songs, The Lost Trades tell carefully crafted stories using an array of stringed instruments and light percussion, all lovingly stitched together with soaring vocal harmonies. This will be their second visit to the club after a triumphant night back in may ’22 and no doubt they will have their recently completed album, “The Bird, The Book & The Barrel” on sale for you to take a little bit of them home with you. So that’s it for April, another exciting month I’m sure you’ll agree and for the floor singers amongst you I can promise that singers night service will be resumed very shortly!! Cheers Rob x |
