Woodman Folk Club - Newsletter

Well, here we are again folkmates, almost at the end of our opening month of the year, just one Friday left and it’s been pretty good so far I’m sure you’ll agree …..

So on to February then and on Friday the 2nd we’ll be kicking off the month with another one of our superb Singers Nights so don’t be disappointed, these singers nights are normally over-subscribed so do please contact Debby or Derry on 01384 560462 to ensure you get a floor spot, we have a maximum of 14 slots. Alternatively just come and enjoy the talent on display. A great night is guaranteed! REMEMBER 8.00pm START.

Now on to our guest nights and don’t forget that it is now a whole £2.00 cheaper on guest nights for club members. It really doesn’t make sense not to join if you come more than 2 or three times a year.

Next on to the 9th and tonight we are once again very proud to present our old friends from Wales, Ruth & Ken Powell.

A formidable pairing, two thirds of ‘Risky Business’ but also excellent as a duo, they have played the Woodman many times before and were last with us in November '22. As well as being a masterful guitarist Ken is also a superb luthier and you can bet that tonight’s instruments will all be of his own construction. Ruth is just simply a brilliant vocalist and together they’ll put on a show that will leave you wanting more.

Then on the 16th we are delighted to welcome back Tu-Kay & Ryan. They debuted at the club in October '22 and went down a storm. Not - as the name might suggest - a couple of rappers, but an award winning acoustic duo featuring a fusion of alternative folk, Americana and roots music. Ash Tu-Kay and Rebecca Ryan have been performing together extensively since 2018, gigging all over the UK and internationally. Both Ash and Rebecca had been writing and performing original music independently prior to the duo's formation. After meeting in the spring of 2018 in a studio session with a mutual friend, they instantly formed a musical connection. Shortly after this they decided to collaborate on some of Ash's unfinished ideas and Tu-Kay & Ryan were born! They have recorded some material and merchandise will of course be available for you.

Finally on the 23rd it really is a great pleasure to welcome back local lass and club favourites, Kim Lowings & The Greenwood. It’s always with very great pleasure that we invite Kim and the lads and they never fail to put on a brilliant night for us. They have been regular guests at the club for several years now and their musicianship, Kim’s vocals - backed up by Dave’s haunting harmonies - and their general charisma and stage presence have simply gone through the roof over the last few years. Their growing collection of CD’s will no doubt be on sale at the show should you want to take a little of them home with you. Another unmissable night in store!

And finally of course February marks the club’s birthday, 53 this year and still going strong despite all that’s been thrown at us during the last few years. So, here’s to the next 50!!
